Hi all,

I'm still pretty new to TYF and have failed to introduce myself.. So hi, my name is Pete from New Jersey and I am rapidly becoming a TYF-Aholic. I have a 2000 Yukon SLT 5.3 4x4, and formerly the proud owner of a '95 Tahoe LT 5.7 4x4. This site is fantastic and you all have helped me out so much already (whether by answering my newb questions or from stuff already posted) and I really appreciate it. My next day off will bring the swiss-cheese mod, 6-Hi mod, and a Seafoam party.

Anyway, for about the last 2 years, I have been enjoying the "Gorilla-Tape Holding on my Drivers Side Mirror Mod" (I searched for it in the forums, but apparently I'm the only one doing it... it's really quite stylish). It all started when I tried to fold in my mirror and part of the pivot broke. It then sounded like it was full of rocks and could not hold the mirror up.. hence the Gorilla-Tape. After a while I just forgot about it because the mirror itself is fine.

So, my question is : Is there a way to replace the pivot or mounting point only? The replacement mirror assy is cheap enough, but then it has to be painted :emotions122:. Or, if you can't replace the pivot, can the painted part of the old mirror be removed and put on a new mirror? It looks like it is a separate panel, but I haven't tried to mess with it.

Any insight is appreciated as always,

thanks,
Pete

hey Pete, sadly, I think the whole thing needs replaced. Mine got damaged in a hail storm ( broke the plastic) and the whole assembly had to be replaced.

yeah, motors and glass can be swapped over but not the pivot point. it was a super big pain when i had a C5...seems the general knew they would all pop off and free spin but wouldnt recall them...but then dodge had the same issue in 02 with the rams and recalled w/in a few months...but GM wouldnt in 7 years.

if u dont want to deal with it, u can do what i did for a while on the vette...if u dont need to fold it in regularly (and I assume u dont since its taped) get some JB weld or some strong epoxy, and seperate the pieces enough to get it in there, and then glue teh damn thing into place, tape it down till it sets, and then be done with it.

PS i "think" the black cheaper mirrors are molded as once piece...the painted cap trucks are removable with some tabs on the back side but wont swap over unless you get one that has a seperate pop out panel....i'd just glue the damn thing tho...

Cheap and easy, I like it! I don't know if it will look as good as being taped on the truck but that's a great idea :waytogo:
