So I'm installing some LED daytime running lights and I got the protectors, now on the website that I got them from states to tap into the ground wire. Does that sound right or is it suppose to be tapped into the power wire?

SW CT,
DRL's should not require a resistor as they are on all the time and not flashing like a signal light.

If you are talking about the "led light protector" sold here,
http://www.ledlight.com/led-light-protector.aspx
Then yes it attaches from the positive lead going to your led (your DRL in this case) at one end, and to ground/chassis at the other end.
It contains a pair of zener diodes back to back to attempt to send higher voltage spikes to ground.

If you are really concerned about the longevity of the leds however, a better solution would be a proper voltage regulator to be sure and provide a constant 12V.
