Ok, so I am installing a double din dvd/gps/etc... unit in my 2008 Yukon XL and discovered after wiring everything up that the opening in the dash for the radio is not deep enough :emotions122:

I am comfortable modding stuff (done so in the past) but there is a large metal tube that runs along the back horizontally and I do not know what its function is.

Does anyone know if it is part of the HVAC or just for structural reinforcement?

you don't need to cut ant metal.. just the plastic panel in the back.. then you can tuck all the wire back there and the deck should fit.

I was wondering if I should start the project since cutting the plastic will only give me so much room. I am going to try it this weekend since I really don't want to spend time selling the radio and then looking for a new one.

Thanks for your comments.

a new deck will make no difference.. you will still need to remove the plastic back wall. trust me once you do this you will have plenty of room. i do tons of these trucks at work!

So I took sometime this weekend and cut out the plastic walls (2 total) towards the back of the radio console area using my trusty Dremel.

It didn't come out to bad and since this is for my long family trips, functionality came before beauty :)

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The install looks sub par.
The head unit is sticking out too much and there is a lot of space left around the unit
Here's mine for an example:

If you read the beginning of the thread you would understand why my install ended this way.

That is as far back as the unit would go, there is a large metal pipe that runs along the back of the radio console opening that doesn't give me enough room for this unit. Cutting it didn't seem to be an option since I haven't found out it's function or importance. I was able to remove 2 plastic walls but could go no further.

This radio unit may be temporary, for right now it gives me gps, bluetooth, usb dvd dual zone, aux input and misc.. fo runder $300. :)

I did read the beginning of the thread and I was aware of the install issue you ran into. Not many units are long enough to protrude from the dash after cutting the plastic behind the radio, but I guess yours was one of those few.
It sticking out does not make it look bad, it's the space around it that makes it look incomplete.

Darkmatter, Why is there such a big space around the head unit? What dash kit did you use?
