EGR removal

Exhaust Gas Recycle, I think it is. Helps warm your engine on start up from what I was told.
So, while I was working with a friend we some how got on the subject of EGR and how he gets rid of his on every car he's owned. Says he'd rather trade a rough start for more power. As we were busy I didn't think to ask, just closing off that line, how much power can you unlock?

Any one here do that? Did it make a noticeable difference in power?

I figure just capping this line in the exhaust and the intake manifold would get the job done.

what year do you have? you will get an egr code unless you get someone to tune it out...its very easy to take out of the loop, but its not for smooth starts.

As fyremanpat said, EGR has nothing to do with smooth starts... has to do with emissions and fuel economy.

The EGR system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is designed to re-inject exhaust gases back into the intake air mixture in order to reduce combustion chamber temperatures, thus reducing NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) emissions which are very harmful to our environment. NOx forms primarily when a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen is subjected to high temperatures.
It has NOTHING to do with start up or warming up, in fact, the EGR valve only opens during light to mid throttle applications while cruising or light driving, and the EGR valve closes during hard throttle WOT applications in order to provide the engine with the most power for passing, merging etc. It does reduce some power, but you really dont need power at cruising RPM's and when you do need power, thats what the EGR valve does, it regulates how much exhaust gases flow into the engine. So unless you really want to deal with the check engine light and lack of emissions especially if you have emission state inspections in your state, I would just leave the EGR valve alone and find other ways to increase power.

I'd say its not really worth it to remove the EGR from the loop. Especially if you live in California (I don't know if you do, but yeah, very strict standards for emissions testing... sucks..). Anyways, you probably wouldn't see a drastic difference anyways. I'd stick with what 99Yukon_Z71 said.

I do live in Cali. Which does suck for emissions, and gun owners.

I'm convinced, I'll be sticking with the EGR.

EGR will only give hard start issues if it's stuck open ... most times it sticks closed.
