when was your last tune up the rotor might not be burnt up and not making a solid connection with the cap and a crank sensor wont stop the vehicle from running trust me i know had it unplugged after a tune up noticed the CEL on and drove all the way to autozone with it unplugged:fc5716bd:

I am about to change the rotor and cap. If that isn't the case, where do I check for coil spark? At the connection to the distributor cap or connection to top of coil

It wasnt the rotor or cap. I pulled the wire at the distributor to check for coil spark and nothing. Probably replacing coil next.
