If your engine is running rough but there are no codes being thrown, is there any way to diagnose what the problem is? For example, is there any software you can hookup to the vehicle that would point to say a bad coil pack on cylinder #4? Would an OBD II scanner tool give you that kind of information without a code present?

Yes but you need a more advanced scan tool that can monitor live data.

If you need a good scanner, I can't recomend the 31603 by innova enough. it has every thing I can think of for our particular trucks.

I have a snapon modus ultra. I'd be happy to scan if you lived closer. This isn't a tool that I'd lend out though. Paid 6k for this

I ended up getting a copy of Auto Enginuity a few years back with the GM Enhancement. The basic program gets you access to live data. The enhancement gets you a bit more access and information. The program and enhancement ran about $500 at the time. It's not a Tech2 or a snap-on, but it will get the job done.

I've heard that the Tech2 has been superseded, so you may be able to score a deal on a Tech2 if you look around. If you also have non-GM vehicles, aftermarket is a better choice.

I run it on an older Dell Inspiron 10" laptop, and it works great as long as I don't go crazy with the live data. It may do better with a stronger machine.

Autel MD802 is currently the most thorough scanner for under $200. Also does ABS, Airbag, and other BCM codes.
