I noticed my engine hrs went back to zero. Anyone know how this happened?

That information is stored in a PROM in the DIC.

My guess would be some type of power surge or loss of memory.

I never saw it happen before, and coming from me - that is pretty rare because I have done almost everything to that model of vehicle possible.

This happened to me today. The gauges all dropped to 0 and then came back and the odometer and hours were at zero then the odometer never came back. Im calling the dealer first thing in the morning. This is already my 4th cluster.

I talk to the dealer and they want me to bring it in and leave it they don't think its the cluster even though thats where all the info is stored. They think its the pcm or bcm. I'm guessing its just that they don't want to replace the cluster again. I'm going to talk to another dealer before I take it in since I don't have time right now.

Something doesn't smell right. The dealer said it could be something in the BCM? The Body Control Module is not physically connected to the Powertrain control module.

The BCM would monitor such things as the air bags and the seat belts and the door locks and the remote start.

The Power Train Control Module monitors things such as the speed, the anti lock brakes, engine diagnostic's etc...

Depending on what year it is. The speedo and the wheel slip sensor is usually located in the transfer case and not physically on the rear wheels like the newer models.

I would say there was some type of short and that it is feeding raw current into the cluster. That is burning out the chip that retains the memory.
As the dealer said, the problem is most likely not in the cluster itself.
