Ugh, the frustration consumes me.
2011 Tahoe LT 4WD, 77,000 miles. Engine started making this ticking noise from the passenger side head area about 4 weeks ago. It never goes away cold or hot and the ticking increases with RPM. Made an appointment and took it in. The technician verified the ticking noise but couldn't pin point the source. The invoice states that the exhaust was checked with NO leaks detected. States that the tech contacted GM TAC and they advised to remove valve covers and inspect the rockers and lifters. Dealer called me and said if they didn't find anything covered by the 5yr/100,000 mile PT warranty then I would be responsible for all costs (around $700). I expressed my dislike with this. If GM is saying to remove the covers then they recognize there is probably an issue internally or know of a common issue with rockers and lifters. I contacted GM directly and have gone round and round about this finally they said they would cover it. When I called the dealer they said they knew nothing about this. I then called GM back and got the run around that the case had been handed off to a Senior Advisor and she is now back peddling saying only one hour will be covered of the labor costs. I am completely frustrated. I have a truck with a ticking at 77,000 miles this should not happen. Everything I have seen online talks about lifters going bad, mainly the ones associated with the active fuel system.
Now the Senior Advisor began consulting with her supervisor and I haven't heard anything back yet. My thinking here is this: If GM is advising to remove the valve covers and perform an inspection then that should be covered. It wasn't like they said well if you want to look further that would be the next step. They flat out said that needs to happen. My family only owns GM vehicles and have been longtime customers. I have had GM cars with 200,000 miles on the original powertrain without major repairs. Now I have this $50,000 4 year old Tahoe with 77,000 miles and it has a ticking noise and GM says I should pay for all but an hour of labor. That is crap, it is a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty. If I have a powertrain concern it should be looked at cost free. Go the extra mile GM, these engines should remain problem free longer than this.
