So about a month ago I purchased a GM certified 2008 Tahoe. It has 36k miles on it and has the 12month 12,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty that comes with the GM certified and the powertrain warranty has until December of 2012. I can get an extended warranty, on top of the bumper to bumper, so I would be covered for up to 84,000 miles for $900 through GM. Thoughts? The only reason that I am hesitant to do this is because I would like to do some mods but the warranty would definitely hinder that.

What kind of issues should I be looking for at higher mileage? Any major issues that would be alot of money?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I bought the major guard warranty the dealer sold for my 2008 tahoe ltz i just purchased. Since the time I have had the brakes replaced due to a faulty brake pad and had the rotors cut. I also had one wheel hub replaced bc of noise issues and monday I think I am having the drivers side front hub replaced. All this is covered under the major guard warranty as well. They put me in a suburban through enterprise as well while my truck is in the shop.

Buy it, you're going to need it!! i have had:

1. Transmission replaced
2. Rear end replaced
3. All wheel bearings replaced

All under warranty, well worth the investment!!

Thank you for the input, from just those two posts I will be getting that warranty. Even if it means that for mods I have to go through GM performance and my local dealer at a higher cost.

Just make sure the warranty is indeed through GM....
and not some aftermarket organization they are selling for.

I didn't think GM would sell an extended warranty if the original warranty had expired.

Interesting, will have to check into the one at the dealership further. I was initially told that it was through GM and was the same as the bumper to bumper that I have now. Thanks for the info

$900 is a real fair price. Here are a few things to watch out for though. In the end every one is different.

Watch out for deductibles as even paying $50-100 a pop can get expensive over time.

I have one on my Denali and my Impala and haven't used either yet. My Impala was a real pig before its bumper to bumper warranty ended.

Watch out for coverage. Some companies don't cover overheating for any reason. Wear and tear items are usually not covered for wear and tear unless they just fail. Mods are not covered.

Buying aftermarket parts thru the dealer won't guarantee that they'll cover your warranty. Extended warranty companies are 3rd party. GM doesn't own a single one as GMPP is even owned by a 3rd party company. Read the extended warranty contract because that is who will pay for the repairs, not the dealer.

A 2008 is also already 3-4 years old so if it is say a 5 year plan for $900 then it probably isn't that good of a deal. It'll basically cover non power train parts since GM's warranty for PT is 5/100 already.

Read the fine print with anything. Generally if something non powertrain doesn't break on my Impala in the next 9 months the extended warranty I purchased will be a waste of money. You are generally betting with an extended warranty that your car will have more repairs $$ wise compared to what you paid for it. As I mentioned before wear and tear items/power train items are usually not included since they are under the factory warranty. The companies wouldn't survive if they didn't make money off the contracts. It is basically additional insurance coverage.

I've owned about 15 new cars over my life time. I usually buy the extended warranty. I'll never buy one with a new car again. Paid $1900 for one on my 08 Corvette, traded it in at the 38th month mark with 30k miles. I received $950 back. I basically paid double for the coverage already provided by GM. Needless to say I didn't buy one with my new 11 Corvette Grand Sport but will look at it when it is about 23 months old (price jump at 24k or 24 months).
