still nothing. i replaced bulbs, more fuses, pigtails...wrapped up some wires that i thought "might" be causing it...nada. this has me so frustrated i wanna get rid of this damn thing!!! i guess the next thing is to try replacing the signal/multifunction switch. i'm not looking forward to that at all.

blizz, i was looking online to see if anyone else had a similar problem, and i found something (possibly unrelated) in an isuzu or something. they supposedly have 2 separate switches for the 4 way flashers and the blinker switch. they were having similar problem with the blinker popping fuses while the 4 way flasher wasnt... or maybe it was the other way around. anyhow, i'm trying to look online to see if there are 2 separate switches that are used in the blinker/flasher circuit in your truck. if i can find out conclusively i'll post it up with some parts or something. maybe it'll help, maybe not. branndon

i'm getting a hit at the tahoeforum.com from google-ing 4-way flasher tahoe, or something close to it. just can't open it up. keeps giving me the white screen of death.

have you tried another combination switch? (the blinker/cruise/etc. switch) you may be able to find one at a junkyard for cheap, that way you're not out too much if it doesn't work. may be worth a shot though.

ok. according to my haynes manual, there's 2 separate flashers. "TURN SIGNAL FLASHER 1. the turn signal flasher, a small canister shaped unit located in the convenience center under the dash, flashes the turn signals. 2. when the flasher unit is functioning properly, an audible click can be heard during its operation. if the turn signals fail on one side or the other and the flasher unit does not make its characteristic clicking sound, a faulty turn signal bulb is indicated. 3. if both turn signals fail to blink, the problem may be due to a blown fuse, a faulty flasher unit, a broken switch or a loose or open connection. if a quick check of the fuse box indicates that the turn signal fuse has blown, check the wiring for a short before installing a new fuse. 4. to replace the flasher, simply pull it out of its electrical connector. 5. make sure that the replacement unit is identical to the original. compare the old one to the new one before installing it. 6. installation is the reverse of removal." then... "HAZARD FLASHER 7. the hazard flasher, a small canister-shaped unit located behind the main light switch behind the dash panel, flashes all four turn signals simultaneously when activated. 8. the hazard flasher is checked in a fashion similar to the turn signal flasher (see steps 2 and 3). 9. to replace the hazard flasher, pull it from its connector under the dash and install a new one. 10. make sure the replacement unit is identical to the one it replaces. compare the old one to the new one before installing it. 11. installation is the reverse of removal." i'm assuming that the blinker stalk switch thing, the thing you push down or up to turn on your blinkers? i'm assuming it just provides the power to the blinker switch, it's probably just an on/off switch that provides power to the "turn signal flasher." i'm no electrical whiz, but from what i gather from the chassis electrical diagrams in the back of the haynes manual, the same wire is used for the blink and flash, so if you're not popping the fuse for the emergency flashers, i would probably rule out any shorts in the chassis wiring going to the lights. i'd check into the turn signal flasher though, maybe it pooped the bed on ya. sorry for the painfully long post. hope it helps. branndon

no apologies needed! i appreciate it. see that's what i was thinking...if the emergency flashers work fine then how could there be a problem with the wiring? so i'm leaning more towards the switch itself.

so here's an update that really changes things. previously, when putting the emergency lights on, perhaps i was lucky in that i tried it in that one instance that they actually worked. today i tried just the emergency lights and bam.....a different fuse...the one for the emergency lights blew in a matter of 2 seconds. that rules out the switch then doesn't it?

hmmm.... well maybe so then. hate for you to have to trace all that out. hey, try removing the lights and then trying one at a time, maybe you could narrow it down to which one it is, unless you have an idea of which one it is. sucks that it's probably one little nick or worn spot causing you all the headache.
