I will be getting a 2001 Denali very soon (parents are buying an Escalade), and would like some advice. I'm an audio guy so I plan on adding an aftermarket head unit (Kenwood excelon 693), the kit to integrate it into the OnStar, and the steering wheel control adapter, and yes, I'll install it myself. I'm 17 and have a few HU and amp/sub installs under my belt so I have no problem doing the work myself.

Staying with the factory sub isn't a option though, it may be fine for some people who aren't much into music, but dubstep on it makes me laugh it's so weak. I only have 350W on a Type R in a sealed box right now in my 2DR Blazer and it's MUCH louder, hits much deeper, and I'll be going away from it when I get the Denali, my current sub/amp will go into the boat. I plan to go bigger for the Denali though. I'm thinking 750W on a 12" Sundown SA-12 in about about a 2 cube box ported to 32Hz (that I'll build myself). (Or 2 of them on about 1000W in a 4 cube box, depends on my budget)

If I can though, I'll probably keep the stock speakers and Bose amp to save some money.

Does the factory Bose system have high pass filters built in? Does it have a built in low pass filter for the sub? Can I simply disconnect the sub from the factory amp? Or is it a hard wired mess at the factory amp?

Basically, how simple is it to use the factory speakers with an aftermarket sub, WHILE retaining control of the high pass filters and low pass filters to the speakers and aftermarket sub.

I'd try it on DIYMA or some other car audio place, but direct experiences with 2001 Denalis will be tough to come by there so I'll try here first and see if anybody can help. I've tried Crutchfield and google but nobody quite has the answers I'm looking for. Most people replace the Bose amp and everything, so it isn't much of a help since I'm trying to retain the factory amp.

yup, simple, keep the front as is, keeping the same crossover settings, just tap in and use an aftermarket amp to the designated subwoofer.

Does the factory amp has built in crossovers? And what frequency and slope are they crossed over at if so? I have OCD about that type of thing.

Depending on the music and who's riding with me I adjust crossover settings on the fly, so dealing with a preset from the factory would be terrible.

Well that sucks. Screw that crap then, I'll just add my head unit then and call it done.

I added a Kenwood to my bose and onstar system. I am still running the pathetic factory sub but I must admit is all sounds 10x better. I think I will put an aftermarket amp to the factory sub. I have heard some set up where they add a amp to the factory sub and it helps but nothing takes the place of some real subs. I just dont want to lose the space. I found the built in equalizer in the stereo works pretty well adjust out the door speakers. I must say, I am surprised how well the stereo sounds but I am getting th itch for some more clarity. Its a great starting point.

Yeah I think eventually you'll end up wanting to scrap the stock stuff if you're this much into your audio. the 1st thing i did was add my Pioneer AVH-P4100dvd headunit and some 4-way 6.5s and the hoe sounded 10x better. I'll eventually change everything but the budget of a part time worker/full time college student with a truck note, insurance, rent, and beer fund doesnt really allow me to work as fast as I'd like too. But sticking to the topic i would just try the headunit and some aftermarket speakers. You'll get a decent amount of control.
