Yesterday I bought a 97 2 door Tahoe 4x4. Prior owner had 1 key and no remotes. How can I determine if it had the remote opening system from the factory? What's the best place to get replacements and how are they programmed? Thanks!! Mark in Los Angeles

I called the dealer and gave them my vin number. They were able to tell me what my truck was equipped with. My 96 has remote locks so Id be willing to bet yours does too.

I then got on ebay and found a remote from Midwest Keyless. Ordered a used one and payed 12 bucks for it.

Do a search on here for remote keyless entry. Ive forgotten all the exact details, but I know programming my remote took a minute of my time and a paperclip. You insert the ends of the paperclip into the obd port under your steering wheel, i just dont remember which ports off the top of my head.

If I recall correctly, my "new" remote came with programming instructions as well.

Moral of the story...don't let the dealership charge you 100+ dollars for something you can easily do in 2 minutes for the cost of 15 dollars.

Yeah, there is a site you can run the vin on to see the factory options. I then bought 2 remotes on ebay fro $35 and spent 2 minutes programming them.

I ran the decoder... Any thought as to what they call the system or the option code?

You can also jump the #4 slot to the #8 slot on the OBDII port with a paper clip. If your locks cycle, then you have keyless entry.

After this, you can then press and hold the "Lock" and "Unlock" button on the key fob at the same time to program the remote. The locks will cycle again and your done. Very easy.....
