When I topped off the coolant, I used universal. Now I notice the temp is getting real warm (couple lines from the red), and having a tendency of staying there for an extended amount of time. When I swap out the new thermostat, is there a certain type of cooling I should use? I've read enough that I know to stay away from Dexcool, but I figured universal would work fine, but it seems to have negatively impacted the temps somewhat.

I personally recommend Amsoil Propylene Glycol Anti Freeze. Not just because I sell it either, I began running it in my Duramax after I changed the water pump when it failed and I have installed it in several trucks. The major thing we all have seen is that the temps stay more consistent when under a load regardless of the outside temps and regardless of the loads. It is also environmentally friendly, you could actually pour it out on the ground and it wouldn't hurt anything, your dog could drink it and not be harmed, etc. Now it does cost more than other brands on the market, but it won't eat up the seals in your cooling system and the service interval for it is 750,000 miles. That means that you change it once and pretty much never have to do it again, unless of course you are one of those folks that actually LIVES to drive and covers 100K miles a year or whatever...lol

Here is a link to a data bulletin explaining more about it.

A properly maintained dexcool cooling system with no contamination will be perfectly fine. when it becomes contaminated it becomes acidic and that is what creates issues. and it was mainly with older technology gasket material and design. Some stories just won't die.

Alright flushed the radiator tonight as well as replaced the thermostat. With the motor running, and both the rad and overflow topped off, and heater blasting, we could only put 2 gallons of coolant in (I see it's rated for about 4 since I don't have rear heat). Any idea why? Ran it for about 45 mins, temps stayed good and never went above 210. We added a little as it went down, but 2 gallons was all it took :help:

because the block is holding some as well. when you flush it out you should finish it off with distilled water, drain what ever you can and add straight undiluted coolant. as you heat cycle the engine a few times you will need to top it off which I do with straight coolant again. by the time it settles in you have a rough 60-70 % concentration.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks
