Pulled a PO446 code the other day. Had this code a while back and replaced the
ACDelco 214-1105 GM Original Equipment Vapor Canister Purge Valve and cleared the code. Found it on Amazon for $19.20. This part is located on top of the manifold, under the cover. Two 8mm bolts, an electrical plug and a hose and this swap is done in about 10 minutes.
Note the carbon pellets.
After a bit more discussion on the NBS thread, I decided to go ahead and replace the other 2 parts of the system. I cross checked the part numbers on RockAuto, but found the best prices on all 3 parts were on Amazon. Plus a gift card helped.
ACDelco 215-464 GM Original Equipment Vapor Canister
$86.01
and
ACDelco 214-2149 Professional Vapor CanisterVent Solenoid
$14.07
This is the OEM assembly removed.
These two parts go together and are located just behind the fuel tank, directly above the rear axle and inside the exhaust as it bends over the rear axle on the passenger side.
Stock height gives plenty of room. Being lowered makes it very tight under there and assembly is tucked in there pretty good. There is not much play as the pre-bent hoses coming out of the fuel tank fit perfectly. It does not give you much play to work with or get your hands in there.
Will try to get a better picture, but this is looking up from the passenger side, just in front of the rear axle.
There are 3 hoses and 1 electrical plug to disconnect and 2 bolts to remove the assembly. There is a small tab that helps hold the bracket/entire assembly in place to install the bolts and remove the hoses/plug. As soon as I started to remove the hoses, carbon pellets started dropping out which tells me it was a good move to just go ahead and sort it out now.
The 2 fuel tank hoses have the same style connector. Zoom in on the assembly and you will see the ring around the tube that the connector latches onto, thus not allowing the hose/tube to back off. Have to get a flatblade screwdriver x 2 to release the tabs and pull it off. Easier said than done in the tight space. The electrical plug is a standard GM tab and pull it back.
The final hose had a different style clip that I just could not get figured out. Has a blue squeeze tab, that you are supposed to push in with 2 fingers, release from the ring and pull off. I tried every which way I could fit my hands in there and ended up cutting the nub off the old assembly to get it off. Then I can dig out the remnant end from the clip without the big canister in the way.
You can see from the picture where I cut the end off.
So thinking I was done, I tried to pull the assembly down between the exhaust as it turns over the top of the axle and the rear axle. No way in hell that thing was coming out. Out came the jack and jack stand, and up she went about a foot or so and then back under to pull the assembly out.
I snaked it out while dropping carbon pellets on the ground. I ran out of time tonight to move forward with reassembly due to family duties. Not complaining as watching my daughter competition dance training is truly special. Going to give that bracket a quick scratch and rattle can tomorrow, since it is off the truck. Swap the hoses off the old unit onto the new unit and blow out the hoses from the engine bay down to the fuel tank to make sure and get all those pellets out.
That should rectify the code and the slow fuel filling that has recently cropped up. To be continued with reassembly.
