Well I wasn't expecting this one..

After taking off the front door panel grilles front the speakers - to examine the speakers and see whether or not I could replace them without taking the entire door panel off...

I drove over to the car wash and hand sprayed the entire vehicle down. Spring cleaning. After getting back to the house, I noticed that the actual speakers were wet! From the cone and around it!

Is this something common? Surely there aren't any speakers out there that take on water? I mean, they are not supposed to? Right?

What could be the problem?

And when I change out these speakers? Should I wrap plastic over the backs of the speakers? It is just in the front. The backs weren't wet at all.

Thanks and please respond!

possibly your door sills are leaking or even the window seals, I know it seems that the window sills on these trucks get old quick, so you probably could take your door panel completely off and then spray it water to see how the water is getting inside your door

I'm confused....only the front of the speakers were wet? Wouldn't you see a water trail or dampness anywhere else when the door is apart? If it's ONLY the speaker cones, that almost sounds like someone sprayed them from the front as a joke.

no, it's not common, I'd get a bottle of water, start putting in in around your outside seal while you watch inside your inner door, find out where the leak is.

Are you sure the window was up all the way before you starting washing it? We get a couple of water leaks in at work and its because the sunroff was not closed all the way.
Not real common, but has happened. Are there any sighns of water on the door panel?

The actual door panel assembly - is still in the vehicle. It was just those metal covers that do protect the speakers inside the door panel. I had removed those.

The entire speaker was actually wet. They were wet all around the cone of the speaker - but not really along the outsides. I am pretty sure that the windows were up all the way.

It may be something along the bottom of the door. The actual water seals might be a little deflated and worn down. It might be the actual water pressure at the car wash on full blast against the seals.

I will have to take off the door panels - and give it a water proof test.

I do not like the idea of taking off the door panels.

Put the water deflectors back on? Seems that will resolve your problem, since that is what they are there for, to deflect water away from the speaker.

window seals do allow some water to enter the door, especially in heavy rain w/ severe wind, or a car wash. This is normal and to be expected.

The vapor barrier protects the interior panel from humidity, thus making droplets of water inside the door a non concern (as long as it can drain out the bottom and isn;t dripping directoy on anything critical)

Your issue is probably nothing more than you took the rain guards off the speakers and need to put them back on, or perhaps that you have a clogged drain in the door and the water that did infiltrate built up high enough to wet the speaker.

Oh Boy...

We'll see what happens when I take the door panel off. I couldn't think of any better spring project than the one I've got going now.

Once I find myself a big enough garage to park this thing in.. I got myself another project on my list to tackle.

Scrap the entire frame with a metal wire brush (remove rust signs) and to paint it a flat black as a coat of protectant. (it'll last a little while)

and plus if I happen to dubs on the denali - it won't show rust in the wheel base. has anybody else seen this problem?
