I have a 2002 Tahoe Z71 with 140k miles. When I began experiencing hard starts 6 months ago, I took it in and had the fuel pump replaced. Everything was running great. Then I tried to start it yesterday, and it cranked a second, fired up, and died. Now, it just cranks, starts and immediately dies. So my question is this - do I likely have a fuel filter problem, a fuel relay problem, or a fuel fuse problem, or possibly a new pump gone bad - or something else I've missed; and how do I check for any of these?

I would first start to diagnose from cheapest to most expensive. First thing I would do is bleed the fuel lines. To do this there is a green cap by the intake and has a valve. You can use your finger to release air if any. Second I would use my pressure gauge and hook it up to the end of the fuel rail in the intake and see what kind of pressure its making. 50-60psi should be normal pressure. This would check your fuel injectors also. Check of course your filters, relays, fuses. If its been more than a year or two change the filter anyways. To check relays, use a relay that you already have in use for example, windshield wiper,, think number is like 4168 or something like that on top. If problem persist, check fuses with a fuse tester or check each one of them individually. If you take out your filter and turn the key without turning it on and you feel air or see gas come out your pump should be fine.
Are there any check engine lights on??? Maybe also a TPS (throttle positiong sensor) could cause problems.
ULTIMATELY if none of this works... take out your top lid and buy some starter fluid and put some inside the throttle body. If it still does not crack than we have a issue. If you ran out of gas you are going to need at least 8 gallons for it to turn on thus being 4 goes to reserve. Let us know if any of this works.... hope this helps.

If it ends up being the fuel pump, replace with an oem pump. The cheap aftermarket ones won't last very long.
Ok. Fuel lines are free of air, plenty of pressure (fuel pump and filter are good), relay is good. HOWEVER - I discovered my IGN 01 fuse was blown. So - I replaced it, and it blew again as soon as I tried to crank. I suppose that is my problem BUT - what does this fuse do, and how/what do I check or fix to stop it from blowing? There are no warning/trouble lights coming on.
Sorry to bring this back to life, but the fuel pump was the hard start issue? Im having similar problems, first thing in the morning starts right up but throughout the day it gives me problems. Takes a few cranks to start.
