So, drove my truck to go get my new battery today, got home and installed it, then started up my truck to go to the store and this is the problem I've ended up with now!!
So.......is this how a failed stepper motor looks like or does anyone have any ideas? Even though the fuel gauge doesn't work, the DIC is still showing the correct miles left so I know that the fuel sending unit is working correctly! Ran out of daylight around here to go out and mess with it but figured I'd pick your guys brains on the matter!!
If it's a stepper motor problem, anyone know of a good place to find one, I wanna fix it myself as opposed to sending it out!

I THINK it's the stepper motor. If it was the sending unit, I would assume the gauge wouldn't read anything at all and like you said the dic still shows your mileage left. This is just my educated guess.

That looks like the stepper motor is getting an too high voltage to it or something. I would disconnect the battery again for about 15-30 minutes and then reconnect and see if it resets. One way to test the sending unit is to fill it up all the way, and after you have used about a 1/4 tank and it shows gallons used, (of course, reset the gallons used when you fill up), then fill it again and see if the DIC gallons used matches what you put in at the second fill up.

I'm pretty sure the sending unit is working perfectly because the miles left for the gas is the same as when the gauge was working, I was gonna fill the truck up earlier in the day so I know it's showing the right info!!
Gonna go out there and start it up again, if it's still screwed up, I'll unhook the battery for the night and see if it's working tomorrow!

Also, been looking on Ebay and only seeing stepper motors for 03 and up but nothing for 02's, are they not replaceable? Anyone know?

Well, never mind for now!! Went out to start it to see what it would do and it was still buried!! Tapped on the cluster a few spirited times and it's all good for now!! Thanks for your responses, might be refreshing this thread here in the near future but it appears to wanna work now!! Thanks again!

Tahoes seem to be notorious for these sort of problems. When mine did the same thing i had to get a new gauge cluster. It was the stepper motor. Found out later though that their is someone that can repair them. Don't remember who though.

Yeah, had heard the stepper motors are a problem on these trucks but since hitting the cluster a few times has seemed to fix the problem!! Just hoping it stays that way!!

Search Digital Dash Solutions on ebay. He is a vendor on ebay and does great work. Also he has lots of parts including stepper motors if you want to do it yourself. I sent him my cluster because I lost a bunch of lights....I ended up doing a full cluster rebuild per his suggestion-he said the steppers especially go bad...its just a matter of time.

Here is a link to his store: http://stores.ebay.com/SPEEDOMETER-SALES-AND-SERVICE

Thanks for the link, I will keep it handy in case it acts up again and smacking it doesn't fix it!! I would love to fix it myself but will have to message them to see if I can get stepper motors for it because through my searching on ebay all i saw for motors said they were for '03- up!

Would the stepper motor control the speedometer and the oil pressure too? Or would each item in the cluster be controlled by a separate stepper motor?
