Last weekend my 03 Yukon Denali XL began starting hard however once started it ran fine while driving. Then while driving down the freeway for about one hour it completely stopped and would not start again. After viewing several of the posts on here I narrowed it down to the fuel pump by turning the key forward and listening for the pump to engage, the pump was not engaging so then I pounded on the bottom of the gas tank and tried again and the truck started, was able to drive the truck home about another hour with no problems. Purchased a genuine AC Delco pump and new fuel filter and installed them, the truck starts but seems to start much harder than it did before the issue began. Once started it seems to run fine, no hesitation issues. Anything else I should be looking into in regards to the hard starts?

Would plugs be bad as a result of the fuel pump or just coincidence that they are failing at the same time?

Thanks

check the fuel pressure regulator at the line. Lift up the hose and see if any fuel comes out, if so you need a new regulator. Make sure u keep at least 1/4 tank to keep the new pump cool.

Also you should clean your injectors they have cans that you hook up and run it til the cans empty. you just hook it inline and disconnect your fuel line simple takes about 20 minutes.

Found fuel seeping out of the vacuum line of the FPR so I replaced it and it seems to start like it should now. I'm now curious, would the FPR been the original cause of the truck dying while driving on the freeway? Did I replace the fuel pump for nothing or did the fuel pump failure result in the FPR failing also?

The pump failure may have been from the bad fpr. Next time check that first since it is so easy to access. I don't think the bad fpr would of caused you to die while driving though.

denalianyone, thanks for the advice and input. Reading through the forums it looks like fuel pumps are an issue regardless, so with 114,000 miles I was probably due anyway, so hopefully I'm good for another 100,000 plus now! Also glad to learn of the importance of keeping tank at least 1/4 full to preserve new pump, old pump ran below 1/4 on several occasions. For anyone else looking for genuine AC Delco fuel pumps I found mine on EBay for $225 delivered from a seller who is an AC Delco dealer, my local GMC Dealer quoted me $531 for a genuine AC Delco pump! Here is the link to the EBay store:

This is a great forum, thanks again.
