Ok, so I got two codes pop up on my 2004 tahoe z71 with Z flex engine. 5.3L.

0171 and 0174, fuel too lean. I took a fuel pressure gauge and tested it. It came up as 42psi when idling. If I accelerated, it drop down a bit, then back up above 42, but then settled again in the 42 psi range.

From what i read, it could be fuel pump or filter. Does this make sense? I picked up a Duralast fuel filter from Autozone and was going to try this first.

Also, what brand fuel pump have you used?? I was leaning toward a Delphi. Do the kits come with seal, fuel gauge sender, etc?

From what I saw, it seems you may need to replace the ring that secures the pump in the tank? Did not see a part number for this ring.

Doesn't sound like a fuel pump issue.
Sounds like your intake manifold gaskets are leaking.

is there a good way to test if intake manifold gaskets are leaking?

use carb cleaner, spray around the intake base gaskets. if the motor reacts at all, there is your problem.

Thanks. I will try that.

I was looking in the FSM and could not find the information on fuel delivery. At 42PSI, is it cause for concern? What should fuel pressure be?

i think you are fine with the fuel pressure. a lean code is caused by other issues. look for vacuum leaks, leaking intake/tb gaskets, lose intake duct hoses, clean the MAF and TB while you are at it.

I can't seem to find anything on fuel delivery, MAF, TB, etc. in the FSM. I will do a search.

Thanks.

fuel pump symptoms is engine wont start on every ignition turn some times it takes 2 or three turns i know this because i just replaced my fuel pump a year ago
and an OEM fuel pump on amazon is 60 bucks
just a tip driving around with a quarter tank or almost on E all the time severly shortens the life of your fuel pump
