Well I don’t really spend much time writing on forums and usually just lurk around. I don’t really see the need to post things unless it can be passed off as useful or if I am in need of help. With that being said, I just completed 2 FX-R retros for my Avy and also my father’s 2014 Silverado. There is only a few people that I have read or heard about that have actually done FXR retros to either one of these trucks. The Silverado retrofit was one of the simpler ones and only took me a couple hours for everything along with another day to replace the bad recalled ballasts from TRS. There is a thread with good information on GM-Trucks.com about retrofitting FX-Rs into the new Silverado along with Andrew from TRS posting a thread on HiDPlanet on his LS460 retro onto a 2014 Silverado headlight. I will post up some pictures of the Silverado retro I did for my dad as it went hand in hand with my retro as I was doing them roughly at the same time with me taking 2 more months longer on mine due to classes and no extra time. To this date I have done 3 retros for my Avalanche each being 6 months apart due to me not being content and also due to my engineering nature. Pretty sure no one will bother to read this but here are some pictures that is pretty close to a general mockup and prep required to retro FXRs into a GMT900 SUV.

This is not a how-to article though if you combine this information along with Lee’s (GoodinBlack) retrofitting thread you can basically piece the information together to do a FXR retro if you like. Though keep in mind that the new D2S 3.0 that TRS released is suppose to be close to FXR performance and may be slightly easier to retrofit in terms of cutting the headlight reflector, the beam cutting may still be necessary however. From the experience gained from doing this, I would not really recommend doing it if you just want HID’s without blinding people as the FXR is way more difficult to retrofit than that of Morimoto H1 projectors I have done in the past. The FXR is also an extremely tight fit inside and out of the headlight lens with the shroud I choose basically making slight contact with the headlight lens.

Conclusion
FXR retrofitting may not be for everyone, it is probably the most involved retro I have done so far though there is not many GMT900 with them and I may or may not be the first Avalanche with a FXR retro. All I know is, I am extremely happy with it and since my windshield is tinted with AirBlu 80, the extra lightning from the CBI really help. Depending on if I continue my retrofitting trend I may do another one in 6 months (LOL) or move on to a different phase of project. Thanks all for looking and I hope some of the pictures help anyone who is willing to attempt this.

that came out great. so you have fxrs in the high beam location as well? I ran some d2s 2.0 in my last setup, and am going to try the new 3.0 next. But the FXR performance for the price is amazing.

Haha thanks.

good work man, looks good

Thanks

Thanks, I stripped the chrome using outdoor strength bleach. Pretty much the easiest way to strip the chrome on headlight parts. Shrouds use a different chemical.

Thanks, no I only have FXRs on the low beam bowl, a FXR would never fit the high beam bowl, I tried to fit the new D2s 3.0 in the high beam but that too will not fit. The D2S 3.0 have a pretty good output, from what I can tell however, they seem to have a lot of foreground lighting which isn't beneficial for a truck. I will upload a "comparison" pic of the FXR and D2s 3.0 in a bit. I quoted comparison since it was taken at different times so it isn't much of a comparison.

Mini D2S 3.0 using XB35 5k bulbs and Denso Ballast (photo was taken for a friend that wanted a output shot with a bulb that is affordable lol)

FXR 3.0 2.5 inch lens with same bulb and ballast, taken later at night.

As you can see, the Mini D2s has more slightly more foreground light. Obviously though this isn't the best comparison of the outputs.
