My post was directed to the idea that the OP was going to be on 35s. I can tell you from experience 4.56s are what you need with 35s. and most others will agree with me. I have no idea why he would need insane amts of top end power on a ride like that. but with the big tires he will need low end torque to get them moving.

No I agree. It all comes down to the combo. But yes in a truck that is a tank, you need lower gears. There is still always going to be a sacrifice to what you choose. He might wish he had his top end punch on the long highway trips. Im not arguing, Ive owned atleast 10 sets of gears.

Thanks for the posts guys.. Gears are what I need not higher shift points. I can deal with the shift points until I swap in a 6.0 when this engine hits 225k. I have 170k on it now. I was confused how raising shift points was going to keep it from downshifting which was my chief complaint. I have no plans to boost the 6.0 when it goes in and if I did I would go the turbo route and even then only 5-6 pounds max. Thats a HUGE if too. Likely too never happen.

That said i guess i should say what my end goal for my tahoe is and we all have different ones. Mine is not to drag race or race at all. Its to have enough room for my family and pull a trailer loaded with 5 dirt bikes at a reasonable speed in the interstate 75mph cruise speed for example. The stock 265 tires just looks so small on these is the only reason for going bigger. I have ridden in my buddies 02 denali yukon with the 6.0 and it pulls hills way easier than my tahoe does even when I had stock tires. Anyway thanks guys. Are gears something I can do or is it best left to a pro?

Get a pro to do it! Save time and headaches and have it right the first time without vibrations etc. 4.56s will be perfect for what you want! 4.30s even if its strictly a highway cruiser.

You don't think 4:30s are to low? I'm never going to run anything bigger than 285 on this Tahoe which is about a 33 I thought. I'm going to put in a 6.0 too but that's a next year thing.

you can do it, save a ton of cash.

just need two dial indicators with adjustable arms and magnetic bases.. Harbor freight or grainger for them.
its easy as falling down stairs after 15 shots of jack.

Especially with the 10 BILLION! You tube videos showing how to do it.

I'd probably go with the 4.10s if I'm running a 3.42 stock or 4.30s if it's a 3.73 now. I want it to chug along on the interstate with much load on the engine. im thinking with the 285s, 4.10s and a 6.0 with a good tune will get me what I want. I want it to stay quiet too so a loud exhaust is out of the question.

ezdaar I've been reading a watching videos. I seriously think I can pull this off. You just have to shim the pinion for proper depth and the ring gear for alignment. Check your mesh pattern. If that's good your backlash should be also but check it

4.30 on a tahoe jeez way overkill you could restart the planet if it ever stopped spinning

A stock ss silverado comes with 4.10s and 32 inch tires and 20 inch rims. They come with overdrive trannies too. They also come with ss 6.0 engines. OP is saying 33 inch tires.
