It really depends on the tires. All seasons should be able to handle snow with no problem, especially with AWD. Summer tires absolutely will not. Once the temperature goes below about 40 degrees, they stop sticking. No traction whatsoever. And forget about snow. Not happening. Been there, tried that, failed.

Nothing beats a set of snow tires for traction and some winter rims to save your nice chrome finish for the summer sun!

My Blizzak dmv1 tires in 17 are awesome. I can get around in 2wd just fine. 4wd is just added piece of mind so i can get unstuck after playing in the snow

Blizzak offers both all season and winter tires. They are great tires.

I also like Toyo Observe G-something.

This year I have a new set of Yokohama Geolander (i5s i think) They are a directional snow tire and they kick ass. I got a great deal on them and would buy again, however provided I had lots of cash I would've bought the Toyo direction snow again!

As far as I know Blizzak is a winter use only tire....owned a few sets over the years and they were all winter only!

In regards to the OP question a good set of tires will give you the peace of mind needed for the snow and confidence when on the highway. If you live in an area that gets storms several times a month during the winter season you need snow tires or at least an all terrain tire like Firestone Destination AT's or Michelin LTX AT2 if you live in an area like mine that gets the occasional big storm with several smaller ones then go with something like Michelin LTX MS2 like I did or something like Firstone Destination ST or BFG Rugged Terrain.
