I have an '04 Yukon and did exactly what you are going to do. I just cleaned the emblem real good prior to painting, used my fingers and some rubbing alcohol which worked just fine.

Never reapplied any adhesive and just clipped the emblem back in the grill after painting. Never had a problem and it stays put.

Hope this helps.

I should have been a little more specific looking back at my post. I am talking about the adhesive that is under the red GMC letters that hold it onto the emblem.

Do you need to use a heat gun to take it off or you can pry it out?

Why would you want to take the letters out? Tape/mask the chrome parts and start spraying.

It should unbolt

The emblem is held by some tabs into the grill, there are no screws. I never took the letters out of the emblem frame, so I am only assuming that the letters are glued in.

I Plasti-dipped mine. Sprayed a few coats on and peeled off the plastidip on the chrome. Looks perfect. On my 2001, I just had to press in a few tabs that hold it in place.
