Well, just like anyone else with a stock 4l60e, I had a bad day today. It quit at 154k miles. Made it home but it's completely toast now. So, since you guys have no doubt been in the same position I need some help. Am I best off buying a new one from a vendor to have put in? Or having my current one rebuilt? Any good vendors? My tahoe is stock and is staying that way. I just want something that will last.

Any 4L60E that you buy now would more than likely be a remanufactured transmission and not new in a sense.

I would prefer a reman rather than rebuilding due to warranty on the drivetrain. On top of the warranty I think that reman is a better process than rebuilding.

Only way I would rebuild is if I knew the transmission guy personally and knew the level of detail work that they provided.

If your handy, you can rebuild it for less than 500.00. Im building a 4L65E as we speak.

It's slipping terribly. Wasn't bad at first but I toasted it driving the 30 miles home. No reverse at all, and tops out at about 35 mph at about 3500 rpm. All happened at once. Was fine yesterday, started slipping on my way home today, was toast by the time I got home. Fluid is full, but burnt. When it would still shift, the shifts were smooth.

unknown at this time.
Oh I see. Yeah if it is burnt you might have a problem. Perhaps changing the fluid will help. Service manual does say to change it if it is not red and clear.

A reputable builder should offer a two year/24K mile warranty.

Also strongly consider getting the transfer case upgraded while you are at it.

(A bit under 3K$ for both if you have someone do it.)
