They should be happy they got that many miles out of it with virtually no maintenance. Most of us are well aware of the stuff that goes wrong with these rigs and I would say that most are keeping up with the maintenance items. Chalk this one up to neglect.

If he can swing it he should get a collection going for that couple to get a different vehicle or fix the existing Tahoe. Lots of work though and who knows when the engine or trans will go. I used to deal with customers like that in the dead of winter or the heat/humidity of the summer in KC, Mo. I gave them every break I could and was allowed.

$500 is not worth worrying over for a good truck, it's practically a 1-owner vehicle. You'll spend 5X as much trying to get the others up to the same level.

Agreed, but still...200k on a severely neglected model should make anyone else looking for a well-maintained NBS with a few miles rest a little easier.
