Has anyone ever mounted off road lights in the grille?

You should be able to fit a decent sized light behind it, there's quite a bit of space behind my grill. Cant say I have come across any pictures of it done.

You're going to lose a lot of light output behind the grill, the "beam pattern" all but wrecked.

Why not get some small thin rectangular lights as you described and mount them to the bottom of the bumper by the tow hooks?

good point. you could always cut the grill out for the lights and mount them flush in the grill. there are several aftermarket grills out there that use the design that look pretty good.
