Do you get the brake tool at any auto parts store? I have taken the hat off and saw the adjustment screw on the bottom of the assembly and was able to "adjust" it with a flathead screwdriver. So with this tool are you able to adjust the brakes with the hat on?? Also what is a good way to indicate if it is adjusted correctly. i.e. should the hat be very hard to rotate with the tire off the ground, etc. Thanks

Most parts stores will have the brake tool. It has a curve in it that makes it much easier to use then a flat bladed screw driver.

Jack the wheel off the gound enough to turn, then tighten up the brakes until the shoes start to drag. Then turn the other way until is stops dragging, while turning by hand. Then you need to check brake pedal height. If it's in the mid range, get it back on the ground and just do some braking while backing up, a few times to finish the adjustment.

update

Took off rear drums today. star spindles were in backwards. yep.

Also found that the drums that are on it are the ORIGINAL drums from the factory. The vehicle has over 200,000 miles on it!
