the 383 is from a local GM dealer, he has great prices on parts, and apparently on crate motors.
I'm thinking about buying the stock replacement motor now for when I need it.

Hell if you have the coin to drop, go for it. However, do consider that you could do a LS swap to a 5.3 or 6.0 for much less & have a newer/more efficient motor.

I would go 5.3 or 6.0 better motor for the money you can pick up 5.3 with 60 to 70k for about nothing if you look for them on car part. They are so cheap because they do not have many problems out of them. alot of supply and really no demand

if he has the 5.7, will take some modification.

A stock roller, Vortec 350 would be more than ample to last you another 200K miles. :)
