How much does it costs to replace one of these on my OBS 5.7L Vortec? This is outside of my capability (i think) so i'd be sending it out....

I'm not sure on the price but these are so common on our engines. I have a good feeling mine are gonna need to be replaced soon too.

How did you know you needed new ones?

unknown at this time.
Shops will charge about 11.8 hours for both. add 1 for a/c and 0.8 for A.I.R. if so equipped. I was thinking of letting Midas do mine so no matter what state I end up in next I will have one nearby in case of problems. They quoted me $1400 for labor $200 for gasket set and $600 for a machine shop inspection only. That is a remanded long block from the dealer so I will just spend $350 for a top end gasket set, new fluids, new head bolts and have the heads inspected if needed by a engine shop directly to save the money which I don't have anyway.

It is time consuming and you will need a torque wrench $90 torque angle tool from snap-on. But you can have the time to do a much better and cleaner job.

I just had mine done (new heads and gaskets) for $1k or less. I used my knowledge in computers to repair their PCs and in return got a discount. We trade our skills to achieve our goals and now we're working on a deal to fix my AC.
