I was driving on the hyway a few weeks ago when suddenly out of nowhere i heard a rumble and felt shaking below my feet. (like i was driving on the lane departure rumble strips) I thought i blew a tire but when i checked they were all fine. Shortly after that i've noticed that my 4x4 indicator light will not shut off. Please keep in mind that my 4x4 is the type that is engaged manually.

I spoke with a friend and he pointed me at the universal joints for the rumbling. We changed them (the two on the main drive shaft)and it seemed a little better but not fixed. Additionally some times when i put the truck in gear for about 3 seconds i hear a clicking sound, like a skipping universal joint. If i take the truck over 100km/h i still hear the rumbling. Using the manual 4x4 leaver i can engage and disengage it and it works, however the light never turns off(even in 2wd) and i'm still getting the clicking and rumbling. I have a feeling that the splines to engage the 4x4 manually have moved and are sometimes rubbing against each other and skipping (clicking noise) and that there is a sensor which measures the position of these splines which is why the light never disengages(light problem). The rumble i'm not sure about (maybe a bearing or uni joint in the 4x4 transfer case???) Has anyone experienced something similar and does anyone have any helpful suggestions. Keep in mind that it is a manual and not electronically engaged 4x4.

Thanks for any help

Cheers

verify the proper linkage adjustment for the shifter if all is correct the something inside the t-case is broken and causing the front axle trigger to activate and maybe a doing gear shift. a broken shift fork could do that. in any case it is all in the t-case.
