I took of both the HUB and the axle before I could replace the balljoints.
I also had to cut the old balljoint with a grinder so I was able to get it out.
You do not have to take off the torsionbar or the lower control arm.

I have one of these: OTC ball joint separator

It is a life saver! I have used it on many ball joints and it out muscles my air hammer with a pickle fork 100 to 1. If you plan on doing ball joints you need one. I honestly look forward to an excuse to use it.

note: I have not actually used it on my Tahoe, but used it on blazers, F150s, ect.
