This is my first "nice" car with any degree of creature comforts. I'd like to keep it going with the radio and maintain as much factory integration as I can.

2005 Tahoe LT w/ bose + nav
It has steering wheel controls, XM radio, and gps. I'd like to add a reverse camera as well as hands free calling. As I understand the door chime goes through the radio too and I'm a bit confused on what to do this that.

I'd also like an android based head unit (variety of reasons)

Really I'm confused on: how do I link with the factory amp? What about Integration of things like steering wheel controls? Or what about this door chime thing?

My previous vehicles never had any of this. It pretty much consistent of running power and speakers to the appropriate wires on the radio and it was done. This is new territory for me and I honestly have no idea what to do. I know where I want to be but not how to get there

Just about to post almost the same thing.
I have an 04 denali with nose and navigation.
The radio is starting to act up and am thinking of replacing it.
I was hoping to keep it under $500, installing it myself.

Just go to Crutchfield or sonicelectronix.com and put your vehicle in and it will add the modules to keep chimes, amp and accessory power. You will need some module for steering wheel controls. They make various ones and I believe both those websites and lead you to the correct one as well.

As for the radio I highly recommend going to your local audio shop that has demo boards and play with different radios. I find them to be more of a personal preference than a pick this and done kind of deal. I have been through several different radios and always best if you can play around with them in person first.

I have a pioneer avh-5700bhs and a avh 4300 and like both of them. Have always like pioneers though.

I was able to play with a friends radio, I really like it. It's not mainstream though. It's an android based thing.

I guess now that leaves the steering wheel controls and whatnot. Are pretty much all the head units and controllers compatible with each other?

Things to look for are HD radio, Bluetooth, iPhone and android capability , 6 preouts, 14.4 volt preout, usb, camera output, microphone , Pandora and a known brand. These are the things I look for ..

I put a Kenwood DNX890HD in my '96 Roadmaster. It is a double DIN radio. Of course that car didn't have the integration with its radio that more modern vehicles have. The Kenwood has integrated bluetooth for streaming and full hands free phone use, integrated Garmin navigation, and supports rear seat entertainment fully. Take a look at some of the Kenwood lineup. I think you can find everything you need.

Color me lucky. My Kenwood has been problem free except that my ignition switch cycles through off to go between running and accessory. That makes the radio reboot. Could be cured with the right capacitor to keep it alive for a couple of seconds.

My older Pioneer on the other hand came with nav but some proprietary setup. No POIs at all, and updates to the map would be funky.

I prefer my familiarity with Garmin since I have a number of portable units I still use. Just my opinions but I think points worth considering.

I just updated my iPhone and if this doesn't help I might update the kenwood. I have the ddx573bh. I know a guy who spent like 1k on a kenwood with gps and it was good for a while but his GPS sucks now. I'm starting to lose faith in kenwood
