I have a 01' Z71 Tahoe no Bose, but it has on-star. How would i go about wiring up an amp with the stock head unit? What is this Hi Lo Converter ive heard about and do i need it? Complete newbie so a simplified explanation would be great.
Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks alot. So where exactly would i put this and tap into the speaker wire? And the speaker that gets tapped into remains fully functional right?

most ppl i know that do this tap into the rear speaker wire behind the head unit

imo, i would go buy an aftermarket head unit and just do it that way, i dont like using line out converter's, you'll get a better signal with a decent head unit, and that will in turn make it sound a bit better

Im planning on eventually putting a 03 dash bezel and radio cage in my 01 to make room for a Pioneer AVH-P1400DVD, but that's a bit down the line. For now i just want to hook some subs up to my stock radio. But thanks for the suggestion.
So the hi lo converter taps into the wire going out to the speaker in the rear door, then the speaker wire comes out the other end along with the two rca cables right? Would it be the same if the hi/lo converter was in the rear door? Or does it NEED to be behind the stero or the factory amp?
Sorry for so many questions but this is the only place i know i can get quality detailed information.
Thanks!

i believe it just needs to be tapped into speaker wire somewhere along the line

basically it just takes the signal sent from the radio and puts it to the RCA's to send to the sub amp

i dont like messin around with the wire in the doors, besides any normal amp wire kit will give you a set of rca cables long enough to reach to the dash, so thats the other reason i would put it there, so you dont have 15 feet of cable wrapped up somewhere in the rear

but being that i've never done this on our trucks, idk exactly how much room is behind the radio for that to fit, i'd imagine a decent bit just because i can fit the bose harness behind there and that thing is huge

Awesome! And i might actually end up putting it behind the HU, but it would just easier to run it in the door i guess. So im sure this is a pretty easy and stupid question, but why do people say it has to be the rear door speaker? Why does it matter?

i have no idea on that one, thats just the rule of thumb that i've always heard, in reality i dont believe it should matter just because its taking the signal and transferring it to the rca jacks, so my thought on that is just the way its always been done
