HELP! Yukon won't recognize USB movies

I am hoping someone can help. I finally decided to load some movies onto an external hard drive so I didn't have to change disks out every time my daughter wanted to watch something else. Needless to say, I can't get it to work. Here is what I've tried so far:
1. When I plug it into the front USB ports, the vehicle registers the USB under "media", I click on it and it shows the folders, I click on videos and all content and nothing shows up. All the movies are in .mp4, mpeg-4 format.
2. When I plug it into the back USB ports, the videos start to play from the beginning! But I have no way to select which video to play, I just have to keep hitting next until it cycles through all of them and I get to what I want.
I have tried formatting the external HDD to FAT32 and NTFS.

Any Ideas?
