I recently bought a 2003 5.3 vortec and put in my 2001 Tahoe. It runs fine when warmed up but when I crank it , it has white smoke coming from the passenger side exhaust(y pipe exhaust) it doesn't do it when accelerating, only sitting still. And it's also skipping for half a second every 20 seconds when I crank it up but goes away as it warms up. Oil pressure stays around 60 while riding but ups to near 80 if you really get into it. Someone help

Without more information this sounds like a classic case of one or more worn valve stem seals. The white smoke you are seeing at start up is oil burning that has leaked down past the valve guide (s) while the engine has been at rest. Once the extra oil has burned off the smoke clears up. The skip or miss is probable oil on the plug electrode of the cylinder with the leaking guide. Oil will foul a plug eventually causing a miss fire.

Consider pulling the heads and having them re-worked with new valve guides and a valve job. This is not really a big deal.As a cheap alternative you may be able to simply replace the valve guide seals...not sure if this applies to your generation of 5.3. You can run it the way it is for a while but it won't get better and performance will suffer.

I may a similar problem with my 05. Just turned over 160,000 miles and she still runs well. But we have been towing our camper around and I thought maybe I had begun to fry the piston rings or something. Just a cloud of oil smoke on start up and apparently not all the time.
