so at like 9:30 last night running about 65-70 on I-75s into ATL coming home from a music festival towing my popup. the drivers read got a vibration and then instantly bamn it sheered off and i was on the rotor.. was all i could do to keep it from jack knifing and major wrecking.. surrounding cars swerved and no collision. i walked back and forth over 3 lanes and got it under control and to a safe stop.. couldn't find the tire and wheel.. $550 MIA. then a $460 125 mile tow home. put truck on jack stands in the drive way, bed at 4:30am...

Visual damage i have assessed thus so far:

*20" moto metal wheel - MIA
*285/65-20 BFG AT ko - MIA
*dent in the fender before the body line crease and a narly rubber swirl, (im thinking color matched factory flaires or the wide bushwacher factory design will solve this.
*rear rotor - is freaking toast after about haf mile or so of ridding and swerving..

and the tow bill..

and to top it off i had to supply the 2" ball so we could tow camper home.. but that saved me the $50 hook up fee

INsurance opens in about 10 minuets we will see what the result is.. good thing i have full coverage family policy... i think the tire shop will be getting a call form both me and the INS agent about the lugs backing off. and i was planning to take it is for a rotation this week.. ironic...

How long ago had it been since you'd had that wheel off? I've had tire shops tell be before that after mounting the wheels go back and retighten after about 100 miles or so cuz the lug nuts have a tendency to back off for some reason unless retightened.

My brother had the same thing happen to him years ago. But it tore the **** out of his rear quarter panel too. And this was literally a day after getting his Subuurban back from having a custom paintjob. It was in the shop for nearly 3 months, so he dropped the insurance to save some money. Did he get insurance again right before this happened? NOPE. He never did get it fixed, it was over 3k worth of damage and he had just spent every penny he had on the 6k$ paintjob. Ever since then, I simply do not trust ANY shop. I will take my wheels off myself just to make sure they dont use a goddamned impact on my wheel studs. I tighten them myself, then check them again within a week or driving. When I got new tires on my wifes car, I take her wheels off and put them in the back of my truck to go get tires put on them. When I got my new tires, I had new wheels too (NNBS GMC wheels in my sig) so I had those piled in the back too. You want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

yea i torqued them to 115# the day i got the tires put on.. they have 3,650 miles on them.. all i can think is someone was trying to steel them or something.. wrecker said i pulled a had trick or im a very good driver to not have jack knifed and wrecked or rolled.. i guess years of auto cross, drifting and road coarse driving worked in my favor..

It was super sketchy swerving and trying to keep it under control.

EDIT - i had planned to drop it off for a rotation and balance check next week as i hate man handling these big heavy tires..

The good thing is that u okay. Yeah getting jacknived aint pretty. Especially if ur in an 80,000 lb rig doing 55 on a highway happened to me 8 months ago after avoiding a stalled car with no lights on.

so the dent in the rear fender lip isnt too bad i think it can be worked out easy.. but i have been thinking of flairs for a while color matched.. and this is a good excuse to go ahead and get them.. im thinking that flairs would eliminate the need for body work...

so i have 3 options..
1) oem stock couple guys on here have them for sale for the $100 area
2) bushwacker OE style that are like an 3/4 wide. so a tad wider than stock and have a smoother transition into the sheet metal $350-400 + paint

3( bushwacker Extend a fender, and are 1.5" wide... $350-400 + paint

IMO oe looks much better the other ones are a bit overdoing it. The damage isnt as bad as I expected it too be after a wheel flew off.
