Trans running ~HOT~.....
At 53k our transmission oil was already black & slightly burnt smelling once drained into a pan, looking at dipstick didn't look all that dirty (misleading). Magnet had a thick coating on it as well and needs cleaned off every 50k so it can continue to do its job. My trans normally runs 180-185 unloaded & 200-210 loaded @ 5k pounds. Our previous 2 trucks (neither a Chevy) never ran over 170-175 loaded. So my next mod will be this, hope to stay below 170 then while towing our toy hauler. http://www.livinlite.com/7x18vrv-overview.php

Overkill.... if you install the tru-cool you will be fine without the pan. I installed the tru-cool a couple of weeks ago. The trans temp never goes over 150.

I switched to AMSOIL and installed a Flex-A-Lite 4-pass cooler mounted just behind the grille on my '07 Yukon Denali. With an outside ambient air temp of around 80*, towing 7K lbs, I sit at around 180*-185*. Of course when the humidity is 100% at 95* putting the heat index around 105*+ while towing in traffic, my tranny runs a bit warmer like around 200*-205* - can't really get around that. But, unloaded just highway driving the temps stay closer to 150*.

NOTE - do not bypass the transmission heater, which is where the tranny oil passes through the passenger side of your stock engine coolant radiator - the tranny still needs to ge up to temp to function correctly and smooth out shifting - cold oil has a higher viscosity, thus not lubricating your transmission as well!!!

I'm in Houston so we drive the same basic territory and temps. My 2013 Z71 came with an aux transmission cooler, or so the window sticker says it does, and I can hit over 200 in normal city traffic. I've never exceeded 219 but have gotten into the 210-219 area way more commonly than I would have ever expected. Typically when driving 80MPH on the highway and then hitting hills near Junction or coming into city traffic after a long stint at 80 MPH. So did yours have an aux cooler already from the factory and you replaced it? Just wondering how to get mine down to a reasonable temp like you see. I'm concerned about pressure drop running dual coolers or is the factory cooler just junk?

David, I removed my factory cooling and replaced it with the low pressure drop tru-cool. With the tru-cool there is no need to run the factory unit.

Jason, Thanks for the response. I've only had this SUV since December and these high temps have me concerned. Which Tru-Cool are you running? The one I see most on the web is the Tru-Cool 4454 (Part Number LNG-4454).

Although I am amused (better word than what I really think) that a brand new vehicle with aux cooling and the heavy duty trailer package came with a p*ss poor aux cooler from the factory, this really shouldn't surprise me. The last American SUV I purchased was a '98 Durango with the heavy duty off road suspension and it's rear end upchucked at 30K without any trailering or "real" offroading. I'm really just a highway warrior (600+ mile days aren't uncommon) that ends up on oil field roads and fields for my "off-roading".

I noticed there are 2 different Tru-Cools listed here, one with a cold weather bypass and one without. Which is the best way to go?

Jason,

Many thanks. Is this thing a PITA to install or an easy couple of hours? Lots of removal of various shrouds, belts, and such or would I be lucky enough that my existing cooler is an easy dismount and this would use the same brackets and hose connections? Hey occasionally you gotta have dreams instead of nightmares! Thanks again.
