Ok that makes sense. I'm not very knowledgeable with motor work. I'm just gonna shop around for a used gen4 and hope I can get one for decent price. Thanks a lot I appreciate the advice!

If you're considering a rebuild, it may sound odd but eBay has some great deals on Gen IV blocks.
I found an aluminum 5.3 short block out of an SSR for $250 shipped.

Its now making 1000hp in an F-Body

OP, have you done a compression test on the motor? It may something as simple as a bad valve seal. Can't say I've ever seen a tahoe doing a smokeshow.
