How many miles can I expect from the original fuel pump?

My truck has 184k on her. She runs great except on restarts. It seems as if she starves for fuel for about a min then she's ok. My experience tells me the fuel pump is struggling to keep up.
Any thoughts?

Just my experience, My yukon has 120,000 miles on it, If my tank was more than half full it would start just fine, but if it was below a half tank it would take one long or two tries to start it. If it was below a quarter tank , it would not even want to start until two or three long cranks on the starter. I changed my fuel pump yesterday and even with the lines drained and only 9.5 gallons in tank ( first time starting it) it started first try. I let it run for a few minutes, turned it off and started it again and it started instantly.

its hard to say how long the fuel pumps last. mine had around 123k on it, and was operating perfectly except one of the nipples for the fuel supply cracked and was spraying fuel everywhere straight out of the pump.
like i mentioned its hard to guess. it depends on alot of variables. mainly how many times was it ran under 1/8 of a tank. these pumps use the fuel in the tank to assist in cooling them. and they get warm rather quick. when they get warm, it drastically shortens their life. running a upper cylinder lubricant can help alot too as it helps lube the seals in the pump as well.

Have you changed the fuel filter?

Yep. If you question the fuel pump, put a gauge on it and read it at KOEO (key on engine off), under idle and under load (power-brake it).

Your specs should be:

Fuel Pressure (Key ON, Engine OFF) 385-425 kPa (55-62 psi)
Fuel Pressure (vin Z [FLEX FUEL]) 335-375 kPa (48-54 psi)

It depends on what part of the country you live in. Road salt corrodes wires out here on the east coast.

Also sounds like failing intake manifold gaskets. To be sure you need to do some diagnosis (or have a shop do it). You need more info. Fuel pressure with key on engine off would tell alot. If the pressure slowly builds up to spec, i'd suspect a leak, clogged filter or a weak pump. If pressure is to spec instantly, I'd suspect an air/fuel mixture issue. There are other things to check that can also be a factor and those need to be checked as well.

Great post! I'm gonna pick up a gauge today.

My Tahoe has 241k on it's original fuel pump. The check valve leaks down though. I usually have to turn the key on, and pause for 5 or so seconds before I crank it if it's been setting a while.
