I usually dump a 1/2 qt of crap new oil through after draining everything... Puncture the old filter with a nail or screw let that drain put it'll save you a huge mess... I use castrol high mileage blend and love it

I used to run Valvoline high mileage blend and put upwards of 6000 miles on a change and the oil still has "life" left in it, ie. the oil still isn't black. Last fall I switched to Valvoline full synthetic for greater peace of mind when starting at -40, cause even blended oil will nearly gel up at those temps, but full synth won't and will get around much quicker. The oil pressure runs a bit lower than normal on the full synth, but that might also be because it's 5-20 v the 10-40 I run in summer.
