I picked up a complete used escalade roof rack off Craigslist a while back for 20.00 I know crazy just TWENTY BUCKS!!! Now I want it painted black went to a couple shops here in Chicago and no one will touch it because it's chrome now my question is how will I prep so that a body will paint it I did a ill research they said start with 60 grit then 120 and finish with 320. Can anyone lend some info thanks.

Why not just wrap it with black vinyl.

Chrome is hard to paint because of the prep. Even the beset of prep will chip and have the paint come off. Then you're left with scratched and sanded chrome.

There's a thread out there with prepping procedures though... I'll try to find it

Thanks for the input I thought about vinyl but I don't think it will last very long as far the sun and the winters here in Chicago. If worse comes to worse ill probably spray paint it myself but I'm going to check a couple more body shops around here. Yup I Paid 20 bucks, the guy didn't have a clue how much they go for and it's complete with all the hardware!!!

Before you spray paint it, try plasti dip. It will give it a matte finish but you wont ruin $300+ rack if you decide to sell it later. I used it on my wheels and grille and it's held up great for the last year

My vote is for vinyl wrap. It actually holds up pretty well. Search for TYF member PACE and you will see how badass the esky roof rack looks vinyl wrapped.

you can plasti dip it and then hit it with a bunch of coats of the plasti dip glossifier... would be cheap and easy to take off... but it will still have a grey look in the sun.. Thinking if you remove the plastic bottom part of the racks and wrap it all the way on the inside some it should hold up well.. one of these days I’ll try it
