RMS to RMS is right a lot of the time with higher end subs.. BUT the wrong box can change that in a heart beat. Your ohm loads can also change this.. If you're sub is say dual 4-ohm wired to a 2-ohm load, but your amps RMS ratings at 4-ohms is what meets your subs ratings, you're going to over power your sub.
I'm sure ya knew that Chip, but just stating it for those who don't.

I concur Sir. I have a few general rules of thumb:
A: Never buy junk.
B: Match subs to box. (space/freq)
C: Match Amp to sub/box combo (RMS/freq)
D: Never buy junk!
For some reason, I am a fan of low ohms/high current. I know I shouldn't be, but when it comes to subs, I like to keep the impedance low and the juice flowing. You can usually find me with a stable amp matched to capable subs run parallel. That's how I usually wire subs. For mids and highs, I just match to recommended specs.
