I have a 04 tahoe LT that makes a humming noise when I drive it but sitting still it doesn't make a sound. I just changed out the front diff. would like to know if anyone has had this problem and what it can be. Also when it's in neutral and coasts down a hill no noise.

I wouldn't rule out wheel bearings even though it goes away while coasting in neutral. The bearings could be under more stress under load conditions. Can you pinpoint if it's front or rear?

No it sounds like it's coming from both directions

Could it be the trans? Have you checked the fluid? How about the rear diff and transfer case fluid levels?

Check the output bearing of the transfer case for rear driveshaft. Its a needle bearing and common failure item when fluid gets low in the case. Youll have to get the tahoe up in the air to get weight off wheels though to check.

Does it get louder or change with speed? Just trying to rule out the easiest fixes first.
