the manual controls are not hard to come by, several sellers on ebay offer "rebuilt ones"

you would probably have to reach out to one of those sellers, cardone does rebuilds on things and probably some other places but you may end up paying a premium for that.
there is probably a couple dozen of these out in my local junkyard as we speak

I don't know about general issues. Mine has stiff, sticky, and glitchy buttons.

They're not that difficult to disassemble and clean. I had my AUTO one apart, cleaned the buttons and the two temperature pots, and replaced the bulbs (from carradiobulbs.com).
