Hahaha. I was a heavy equipment mechanic for 12 years but then had a life changing experience. Since 2006 I’ve been working at a chemical company in the maintenance department. We pretty much do it all. I'm an electrician (960V and lower), boilermaker, pipefitter, chemical operator, truck mechanic, HVAC, plumber, equipment operator, welder, hazmat first responder, tankerman, carpenter, painter, roofer, snow plow operator, and feels like full time student keeping up with my certificates. Out of everything the electrical classes are the biggest pain. Arc flash training, NEC (national electric code), solid state variable frequency drives, there's always something to keep up on. It was so much easier swingin wrenches and keepng up with ASEs. I’m also certified in CPR (requirement of arc flash training), confined space entry and rescue, waste water treatment and have license to operate everything that we use at work (forklift, bobcat, end loader, manlift, scissor lift, telehandler, crane, even trains because we have to move railcars around the plant). Most importantly, I’ll try anything at least once. Some recent crap we’ve done.

Built a diatomaceous earth filter system that we run industrial strength bleach thru. (We are one of the biggest producers of bleach in the country)

Put in new scales this year too.

With all this shit, I usually work 65-70 hrs/wk. We get to write our own check, but I’ve beat myself up for years here. And it seems like whenever I don’t want to work past 8hrs, I have to go to training to keep certificates up to date.

We brought in some help with the DE filter project. There’s 5 of us maintenance guys. One got into an accident and totaled his truck and was out for 3 months right in the middle of the project. One guy went out for hip replacement surgery, been 5 months since he went out and he still isn’t back. One guy who doesn’t want to be at work, he’s good to do little things, but sometimes that’s all I need so I don’t have to. Then there’s me and a younger guy who will do whatever I tell him, but most times I need to make sure he understands what I’m trying to tell him. He’s young, he learns every day but at least he’s willing to put in the time most days otherwise that project still wouldn’t be done. We had a local mechanical company send over 2 guys for a few weeks to help get us back on schedule. All the while this was going on we still had our day to day work to get done. Worst was when the company auditors came around checking safety devices and checking permits. I blew up on one guy that was keeping me from doing my work because he wanted to ask questions and check every little thing. If I wasn’t using torch set, gauges need to be disconnected and bottles capped. Any time you grind, cut, torch or weld you better have an extra body there with a fire extinguisher to be your fire watch. You better have the hot work permit filled out correctly and have an air monitor out and on checking oxygen content so you don’t blow yourself up. They are crazy. I went to midnights when guy went out for hip replacement, I was happy to do so just to get away from them idiots.

We even brought in electrical company to put in step up transformers because we were 40% under powered. Now we are 40% over powered.

NY to Chicago, your driving skill and attitude would be right at home here. Maybe the driving is a little more laxed here but when you get into road rage argument here, we don’t get out and throw blows and then carry on about our day. Here they pay no mind to pull a gun and start shooting before going about their day. Good thing is most can’t hit the broad side of a barn so it’s usually the innocent bystanders that catch the bullets. Just a day in the life of a Chicagoan.

Still a little under the weather but I can’t just lay around. So I decided I’m gonna get the hitch cover done so I can put it on and keep the road wash off of it. I don’t want a divorce so I’m not gonna paint in the house so I decided to do something different. I went thru my stash of hydrodip and vinyl patterns. Luckily I had a roll of gloss black vinyl. So now I’m sitting in bed, watching Hoonigan series and wrapping the hitch cover. Couple intricate curves but nothing the heat gun can’t manipulate. I’ll let you know how it comes out or if I tear it off and prep for paint.

Yeah, I know. Crazy isn’t it? You’d think if it was illegal nobody would have one. Their way of thinking is if you make it illegal it’ll cut down on the deaths. My response is, then you should make ****** illegal too.
