Nelson Racing if you got the dough. Otherwise my dad always liked to use summit racing back in the day when he ordered engines for people. They have some inexpensive just plain ol' 350s in their catalog. I would find a 350 vortec thats been build by summit stronger than factory and use that.

Wow thats a helluva warranty with the Hiperformer. I'd definitely throw a new block in.

you need top read that warranty fine print.

as for the engine unless you have a 3/4 ton or one ton unit or constant heavy loaded towing, use the 2-bolt main as there are differences in the valve seats between the two. but call or visit gm about this for clarification. 4-bolt does not hurt but the valve seats might effect performance a tad bit. discuss your needs with them. the hd 4bolt is 12530283 and no hd l31 2-bolt is 12530282. also gm appears to be the only one using all new parts including the crank, block and heads. nothing is reused. all the others are remanned.

Ordered the GM crate engine from JEGS, should be delivered to the shop on Friday. Also ordered a set of long-tube headers (with new O2 sensor bungs welded in) while I was at it, will have a local muffler shop install a new mandrel-bent system from the collectors back, probably a true 3".

I'm debating on doing away with the catalytic converters, and having BlackBear do a tune deleting them. Any idea on how it will affect performance, with just the new engine and the headers? I'm guessing about 20HP added with the headers, so I'd be at 275 before the tune. Calling BlackBear later today to see what expectations I should have...

Any other recommendations on bolt-on power mods that won't lower my mileage for reasonable coin?

yes it will effect performance in a bad way. and it is illegal to tamper with or remove them by federal law. keep them or perhaps upgrade them to magnaflows.

Exactly what I was expecting to hear, thanks Sun.

Regarding the BB tune, what are typical HP/Torque/MPG gains?

jennabear just mentioned that here but no thoughts on fuel mileage.

i can tell you a 0411 pcm will give you more tuning ability tho. i have one now. and just changing over to it solved my "mileage to crap" issue from the ported throttle body. i am shooting about upwards to about 14.5mph for short highway trips. it will go back up to the 17-18+ once i get the cats, plugs, headers and rest of O2's replaced and fine tune the pcm to deal with it all. want to get my headers ceramic coated first. and now money to do so or buy new cats or efilive. otherwise headers plugs and O2's are on hand already.
