I need Colder AC; 97 Tahoe

1997 Tahoe 2 door
In my quest to get my AC performace up I have:
Verified appropriate refrigerant charge level 3 lbs even; and 8 oz of PAG oil level.


Performance was cool to somewhat cold
I replaced the compressor, Accumulator, Orifice tube, return line, charge line and Condensor; all with new ACDelco parts.
Pns were:
Condensor 15-6958
Compressor 15-22124
Accumulator 15-1739
Upper Charge Hose 15- 30878
Orifice 15-5612
and return line

Ac is still cool to somewhat cold.......Actually no better than when I started.

What can be keeping this thing from being ice box cold???

Have you looked at the write up on cleaning the condenser? Worked wonders for me. Cooler and blows much stronger. Cools my truck quick even in high humidity so far.

did you clean all lines with a/c line cleaner, then vacuum the system and do a leak down test?

Clean the area by the blower motor. There is a link here about that and my AC blows cold now bro! I have a 1997 2 door Yukon GT. Get those leaves and dirt out, spray some simple green on the coils and a hose through that compartment. Let dry and enjoy.

Update:
The label on the accumulator( which I assume was factory) has a 3 LB fill sticker.
Every thing I read says 2 to 2.25 for a 1997 2 door with front ac only.

So I evacuated and recharged again this time only going to 2.0 Lbs;
49 degree air from the vents; was at 60 degrees yesterday

Granted its a cooler day than yesterday up here in NH but it IS more humid.

I need to run it a few days and see how it feels.

BTW the new condensor AcDelco PN 15-6958 is a lot thinner than the one I pulled out. New one is about 1" thick where the old one was around 1.5" thick. Old one was 22 tubes where the new one is 41, More tubes is more surface area(heat dissipation) on the new condensor.

I'll also be cleaning out the evap coil per the link 4myfreedom posted.

I know there are temp/pressure/humidity variables but what outlet temps are you guys seeing??

System Performance Test



TOOLS REQUIRED
J 21213-A Four Jack Dual Range Temperature Tester


  1. Park the vehicle indoors or in a shaded area.
  2. Open the hood, the doors, and the windows in order to ventilate the interior.
  3. Vent the engine exhaust, if necessary.
  4. Install the high and low side pressure gauges.
  5. Route the lines over the front of the grille.
  6. Close the hood completely.
  7. Record the ambient temperature near the vehicle.
  8. Record the temperature and the relative humidity by using a psychrometer or by consulting the local weather bureau.
  9. Close the doors.
  10. Close all of the windows except for the front side windows.
  11. Set the mode control to the A/C position.
  12. Set the blower control on the HIGH position.
  13. Set the temperature control to the FULL COLD position.
  14. Open the air conditioning outlets.
  15. Install the J 21213-A into the right center air conditioning outlet.
  16. Place the transmission in park.
  17. Start the engine.
  18. Stabilize the engine speed at 1500 RPM .
  19. Start the timer.
  20. Operate the air conditioning system for 10 minutes .
  21. Record the following data:

    • The outlet air temperature
    • The high-side pressure
    • The low-side pressure

  1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
  2. Compare the readings to the table below.
  3. If you suspect a malfunction in the refrigerant system due to abnormal system pressures, inspect the system for the following conditions:
24.1. The outer surfaces of the radiator and the condenser cores are blocked by dirt, leaves, or other material. 24.2. The areas between the condenser and radiator are clogged with dirt, leaves and other material. 24.3. The evaporator core, the condenser core, the hoses, the tubes and other components are restricted or kinked. 24.4. The system is leaking refrigerant. 24.5. The air ducts have leaks or restrictions. 24.6. The airflow rate is low due to a restriction in the evaporator core. 24.7. The compressor clutch slips. 24.8. The drive belt tension is improper. 24.9. The accumulator is plugged. 24.10. The expansion (orifice) tube is plugged.
  1. If you do not find a condition, continue with the CCOT A/C System Diagnosis.

Update 7/11/13
Evacuated and opened up the system to find NO orifice tube installed.
The new AC Delco condensor is made incorrectly in that the lower tube has wrong inside dimension and an OT will not fit in.
Vendor found an article with similar issue and sent me another condensor, same PN, with a OT.
Installed new condensor and charged up to 2LBs of 134A.
Center vent temp of 40 degrees today , with an 80 degree ambiant temp and 66% RH.
I have cold AC finally!!
