Timmy--I didnt view my post as "fighting", but if you or others do, I apologize.
The goal here , as in any other forum, is to help eachother, and if that involves using what I do daily in my occupation to assist, explain, save people time, effort, and money, that's what I'll do.
By the same token if I feel what I do for a living is impugned in any way, I will respond in kind.
I inquired as to the repair of the initial poster to help others should they have a similar issue with their vehicle, and for my own knowledge as well.
We all learn from eachother.

I said I apologized, and I didnt realize you had "rules of engagement".
Understand, I didnt call anybody names, didnt call their profession into question. That courtesy was not shown me.
The person made statements and I asked for explanations. For which I never received an answer, and for that I am "fighting"?
Again, sorry for statements I made which offended.
But I stand by my methods of diagnosis and repair.

I don't trust mechanics.

I tend to agree with Toejam. If buying a laundry list of non returnable parts is cheaper than paying the dreaded mechanic, than you have the wrong mechanic. I have three friends that are techs at local dealers, all three are very good at diagnosing issues, which usually means saving the customer money. Its a shame the majority get a bad rap, because someone got a big bill or taken advantage of. Numerous times over the years, all three friends have found my vehicle's issue the first time and it cost me very little time and money, as I only had to buy one part.

It sucks that I have to say this, but I don't trust ANY mechanic with my car until getting at least 3 referrals from competent sources and then talking to them for at least 15 minutes about the issue with the vehicle.

When my wife and I were still dating, she took her car in for an oil change and they told her that her "confibulator" needed to be replaced. She told him that confibulators don't exist and left the shop with a free oil change.

Fast forward to when she was pregnant with our daughter, she offered to get the two front tires replaced on one of our vehicles. The MANAGER of the shop told her that the car needed an alignment because it was "messed up." They charged her $100 extra for the alignment. When I got home, I looked at the alignment report. What do you know? NO CHANGES FROM BEFORE TO AFTER!!!

I stormed into the shop and it took every fiber of self control within me not to jump over the desk and bash the manager's brains in with a tire iron. I yelled at him for about 5 minutes straight (You took advantage of my wife! you should be ashamed of yourself!).

He turned into a pussycat and offered a full refund.

Sorry to hijack the thread! I'm having some issues as well with idling. Haha.

.

And I dont blame you in the least!
Could you define"competent sources"? As in any retail transaction, it comes down to a matter of trust and honesty.
At our dealership, if during the course of an oil change we notice abnormal tire wear, steering pull, or steering wheel off-center, we check the usual wear items before we recommend an alignment. Many times it's not an alignment issue at all, but rather suspension, steering, tire, or even brake components causing the problem. It is all noted in a "report card" given to the customer, and it is the customer's option to do the work or not. As in your case, before and after specs are provided.
Many times alignments are recommended after tire replacements, and again, full documentation is given the customer. A proper alignment protects the tire investment the customer just paid for. If tires wore abnormally due to an alignment issue, the customer wont get the full performance and life the tires are designed to give. And yes, sometimes the specs dont change, but unless you check the alignment on a rack, how can you know they are correct? And as that is a labor procedure, money has to change hands for that service. But the customer is under no obligation to have the alignment performed. It's the customer's decision. We just make sure it's an informed decision.

Competent sources: my dad, my buddy who was a mechanic in the army, people here on the forums, etc. etc.

Point is they told her that they could see without using any tools that it was in dire need of an alignment. They preyed on her. Botttom line.

As usual, the old adage "Let The Buyer Beware" applies here. Yes, it appears she was preyed upon, but if YOU had taken the vehicle in for an oil change and an alignment was recommended to you in the same manner, how would you have handled it?
What kind of shop was it?

If I had taken it in, he would not have pulled that crap on me, because I'm a man. Also, he cold probably tell from my demeanor (so I'm told), that I would have hit him in the head with a wrench if he did.

It I was having an off day and it skipped by me, I still would have demanded a refund on the basis of them not making any adjustments.

It was a Pep Boys, which is why it was so shocking to me.
