I have a 99 gmc Yukon 4wd (old body style). I installed a 7 blade trailer wiring harness and break controller. The switch from 4 prong to 7 blade was easy. Red and orange wire was already ran. The brake controller harness is my problem. I did all the research I could to make it easy. Orange wire hooks up to the side prong of my main fuse box direct from the battery, blue wire to blue wire for brakes, white grounded to metal, the red wire is where I am having the problems. One site told me to connect it to the box to the far left under my dash. Well that tied my brakes into my lights. Every time I would press the brakes my dash lights would come on. Well I disconnected that, found the white wire coming off my brake switch. Tested it with a prong light tester. Every time I pressed the brake the light would shine. So I hooked it there. Now my dash lights don't work when I turn the lights on. Checked the fuses, number 9 is blown. Put in a new fuse, turn lights on and it blows. I disconnected the red wire from my wiring harness. Put in another fuse, blown. Now the white wire doesn't even test hot when I press the brakes. What am I doing wrong, it shouldn't be this difficult to install a trailer brake controller. Also noticed my left turn signal isn't working. But the bulb is good, switched them around, cleaned the connections and still nothing.

You put too much electricity where it shouldn't go when you hooked into your dash on accident. Did the controller not come with directions? When you hooked into your dash, you provided 12v to circuits that only should ever get5v or so. By the sounds of it you may have fried your headlight switch and/or the turn signal switch, both are known to cause issues, and since you did this, probably melted some plastic and some wires and now electricity is going where it shouldn't and is blowing fuses. Grab a multi-meter and some wiring diagrams and check all the connections on your fuse box, your headlight switch and your turn signal.

I hooked it up exactly like it said, found pictures online showing exactly where to hook up each. There was 2 options with the red wire hook up. Both of them I followed exactly. That's why I am confused about it. I'm not a mechanic, even though I like to work on my truck and usually don't have any problems. Thanks for the input. I will look deeper into it tomorrow. I found something that suggested checking the grounds.
