Well, my inspection is getting close and I have had this CEL on for about 2 months now. Code P0440 = evap emissions control malfunction.

I have been reading a bunch about this but have a few questions.
I know about the gas cap.
But, I have no idea about the purge solenoid, canister or replacing some kind of sensor and purge valve.
What is the purge solenoid?
What sensor?
What canister?
What purge valve?

Does the purge soleniod have something to do with the purge valve?

Does anyone know where I can find pictures of these items?

I have roughly 20 days to get this sorted out. I'll be ordering an OE cap tomorrow.
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys

unknown at this time.
Go to alldatadiy.com get yourself a subscription for about $25 buck and you will probably get more info then you need with diagnostic aids, location aids, oem part numbers, description of operation and detailed info on codes. It will probably be easier then trying to explain here.

I've had this code for about a year now, I got it when I replaced my fuel pump. I broke a little wiring harness on the gas tank when I was dropping it. The code first showed up when I broke that thing and it goes away for a little while when I shove the harness into place so obviously that's the problem. I've asked different parts stores and they don't have it. The truck runs fine, gas mileage hasn't changed and I passed inspection so I said screw it. Sorry for the lack of info, that's all I have to contribute.

sunlit,
Thankfully I have a ton of very helpfull shops, no need to subscribe. Its just getting the time to get to them. This week is a short week so I will finally get a few to go to them.

Rebel,
I wish I could forget about it, unfortunately the inspection rep doesnt let things fly that easy. You should check with AC Delco/Delphi to see if they sell replacement harnesses. They probably could get you one.

One peice of info that was pretty helpfull through my search. Topping off your tank is NOT a good idea. It actually causes gas to go into your canister and cause it to fail/clog. I have topped off my tank for roughly 2.5 years now, not any more. In turn throwing codes such as P0440.
I'll be replacing the canister as well as my purge solenoid. Preventative maintanence :)

Well, the lite has dissapeared.
The run down. I replaced my charcoal canister last week and the lite was still on. Got it cleared at AZ, came back on, got it cleared at Advanced came on a couple of days later. Picked up a new valve and purge solenoid yesterday and noticed my new valve had a plug connection on it. When I looked at the original one on my truck it did not. So, I installed the new valve and plugged it in, hah, also installed the new solenoid and drove roughly a half a mile and the lite went out. If it was the plug great, everything else was more or less preventative maintanence.
Going for my inspection tomorrow :)

Strange. I've never had a problem with this. And I top off all the time.
